Why 1919 (deleted scene from The Avengers) and not 1921 (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), as stated in Wikipedia: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is not canon for the MCU (events of the show take place in another universe, where Peggy was born in a different year and had a different background).
1934-1936 - young Peggy serves as a nurse in the British Air Force.
1936-1940 - Peggy serves in the Special Air Service.

Tumblr media
A couple of days later - SSR in London. Based on the locations of HYDRA bases remembered by Rogers, they develop a plan to combat HYDRA. Steve puts together a team.
Marvel Studios' mistake: the medals and badges Steve wears don't make any sense at this particular moment. He simply had neither the time nor the opportunity to earn the Combat Infantry Badge, or the Presidential Unit Citation Badge, nor could he receive the American Defense Service Medal.

One officer’s attempt to save 1200 Jews was almost lost to history
Karl Plagge 1897 - 1957
Tumblr media
The deeds of Karl Plagge, a man who is now thought of by some as the “forgotten Oskar Schindler”, were only brought to public attention when the son of a Polish Holocaust survivor, Michael Good, began to look for information on a Wehrmacht officer his mother and grandfather had always credited their survival to.
Although decades after Plagge’s death, through extensive research into his actions during the war, writing to and meeting with other Holocaust survivors, obtaining his Wehrmacht files and reading the transcript of his post war trial, Good was able to put together a picture of the man Karl Plagge had been and his motives for wanting to help Jews.
Plagge had served as a young officer in WW1 and during time spent as a POW in the UK he acquired polio through infection leaving him partially disabled and he left the army. He went on to study chemical engineering but struggled with unemployment and financial problems in 1920’s.
He joined the Nazi party in the early 1930’s as he believed it could help grow the economy in Germany but quickly grew to dislike the party when seeing the way they had dealt with their opponents when coming to power.
Through his party membership he was appointed a job teaching science in a Nazi institute but he refused to teach their views on racial theory or wear the required Nazi uniform which led to him being dismissed and he would stop paying his membership fees. He also fell under suspicion of local party members for not distancing himself from his Jewish friends. Although it was never discovered, he had also chosen to become godfather to a half-Jewish child, the son of a close friend, undertaking a sizeable risk in 1938.
By the time of his conscription into the Wehrmacht, Plagge held strong anti-Nazi views. Due to not being able to serve as a frontline solidier he was assigned to a Heeres Kraftfahr Park (HKP), a Wehrmacht car pool based in Germany where he was tasked with overseeing the repair of army vehicles. In June 1941 he was promoted to Major and transferred to another HKP unit in Vilnius, a city in previously Polish territory but since declared part of Lithuania. This unit would be known as HKP 562.
Just days after the German occupation of the city, the Einsatzgruppen and antisemitic Lithuanian collaborators rounded up and killed thousands of the Jewish population in the Forrest of Ponary leaving just a small number in a ghetto in Vilnius. Plagge saw the evidence of this upon his arrival and was shocked.
Wehrmacht officers had written to SS commanders saying they disapproved of the mass killings, mainly because they needed labour to support the army but some on moral grounds. It was then agreed the Wehrmacht could use the remaining skilled workers within the ghetto although the SS would still hold the ultimate authority. It was through this action that Plagge was able to do something to help.
Skilled Jewish workers were given a work permit which protected them and their families, while those without a permit faced deportation to concentration camps or death. Plagge used this opportunity to issue as many permits as he could to employee the civilians of the ghetto in his workshop, Good’s Grandfather among them.
Of the people he had issued permits to, many were actually unskilled and had no prior knowledge of vehicle repair. Plagge had known of this and to cover his actions his men worked alongside the Jewish workers to give them training.
Plagge told his staff at the workshop that he would not tolerate violence towards Jewish or Polish workers and did his best to transfer to the frontline those in his unit who were reported to have broken this rule or anyone who held strong national socialist views.
At first his workers would remain living within the ghetto, but in order to protect them and their families from further liquidations Plagge battled with the SS via letters and visits to their HQ to insist his workers would be more productive if families were kept together and eventually they allowed him to acquire two large apartment buildings just outside of the city and he moved his workshop there. With word of an upcoming liquidation Plagge ordered his men to drive to the ghetto and take with them as many civilians as possible rescuing hundreds more than the original number of workers.
As there were so many people, in order to prove to the SS that everyone was of use to the Wehrmacht he set up further enterprises to enable everyone to be employed which included making furniture, the rearing of rabbits for gloves and hats, the repair of German uniforms and also shoe making. A total of 1250 Jewish civilians as well as several Polish families would move into the new HKP 562 complex.
Although HPK 562 was a labour camp with a surrounding barbed wire fence, Plagge did his best to ensure conditions were as good as he could make them within his authority. In the living accommodation there were cooking and cleaning facilities and even though more than one family had to share a room there were beds to sleep on. He also made sure that there was a doctor among his workers and he later set up a small hospital.
Tumblr media
Postwar photo of the HKP 562 accommodation
Plagge knew the starvation rations issued by the German administration were certainly not enough so he instructed his men to acquire what food they could and was able to provide his workers with an extra meal per day with the remaining food items being sold in the camp on the black market. Since it had been made illegal for both the military and civilians to assist Jews, this black market was necessary as it diverted the intention of Plagge to feed the workers away from the army as they were the ones profiting from it.
Since the soldiers in Plagge’s unit were mechanics also, they maintained a good relationship with the Jews they worked alongside and in many cases actual friendships were formed. From the survivor testimonies Good could only find a few incidences of violence from Plagge’s men and when it had happened there was evidence he had tried to intervene.
On one occasion, when an SS officer threatened two workers with his gun he had caught stealing food, Plagge saw this and dragged the men into the army barracks out of sight and told them to scream as if he was beating them until the SS officer believed they had been punished. What would remain out of his control were the capital punishments the SS would issue to those who were caught outside of the camp trying to escape.
The survivors told Good that Plagge never asked for bribes or favours. Some who had personal contact with him such as the Jewish representative at the camp said it seemed Plagge was actively trying to protect his workers and another said Plagge had told him that he had the authority to grant work permits to all local civilians but he had tried to reserve his permits for Jews as he knew they were at greater risk. They also said that working hours within the camp were reasonable and that they had been permitted a day of rest each week. Plagge had given the children small gifts at Christmas and he had allowed them to put on a play in respect of Purim.
In late March 1944 Plagge took leave to visit his family but he returned to find the camp grieving. While he had been away there had been an order for the SS to deport the 200 children in HKP 562 to a concentration camp. When the soldiers had arrived the children had ran to hide and a small number were later found alive but because they could no longer be seen in the camp their parents had no choice but to conceal them behind walls or under stairs for the entire remaining time they would live there, one of these children would be Good’s mother. Plagge knew there were children hiding in the camp but he never gave anything away.
Parents of those who survived thought it was too risky to tell anyone that their child was still alive and it was a common held belief among these children that they were each the only one to have lived through the what was known as the Kinder Aktion. Good would later discover that around 25 children had survived and through his reuniting of the camp survivors some were finally able see their friends once again.
With the Germans retreating on the Eastern Front, Plagge was informed with little warning that his HKP workshop was to be closed and his Wehrmacht unit was to be moved back within German territory. Realising it was likely that the SS would now liquidate the remaining Jews within the camp, on 1st July 1944 in a final effort to give everyone a chance of survival he made a speech to announce his departure and warned his workers that they were now in the hands of the SS who had already began to arrive to take over control the camp.
Over the next two days the residents began to look for places to hide while the SS guards increased in number. A small number would managed to escape during this time but it wasn’t possible to leave in large numbers due to the increased risk of detection. As predicted, the mass killings began on 3rd July and tragically all but 250 people would survive with the remainder being shot and buried in a mass grave. The survivors would remain in their hiding placing until the city was liberated by the soviets weeks later.
Plagge would never learn how many people had lived or died and his half-Jewish Godson who survived the war said that the man was racked with guilt over not being able to have done more to help and said he was escpecially haunted by the death of the children.
Like all German officers who had ran POW or labour camps, Plagge was investigated for war crimes however a small number of HKP survivors would willingly attend his trial in his defence. Having listened to the testimonies, the court wanted to declare Plagge as innocent but he refused to accept this saying he had to share the guilt of those who had brought the Nazis to power.
In his research, Michael Good would learn that Plagge had written to one of the survivors who had given evidence at his trial, David Greisdorf, enquiring about the man’s family’s wellbeing and arranged to meet with him since his family was now living in a displacement camp in Germany.
From the letters written by Plagge to Greisdorf and kept by the man’s son, another survivor of the children’s Aktion, Good saw that Plagge had expressed much gratitude towards the family’s hospitality and kindness and that the two men had spent hours together talking about the recent years.
In addition to the survivors who had given evidence at the trial, several members of Plagge’s HKP unit had made statements also. Although it wouldn’t be possible for Good to find out much about these men without investigating each one, he found it clear from the transcript of the trial that the men had at least been aware of Plagge’s aims of protecting the Jews within his care. It was also reported that on more than one occasion Plagge had found ways to defend his men who had expressed anti-nazi sentiments and had prevented the accusations from being investigated further.
In a surprise for Good, he discovered that a member of Plagge’s Wehrmacht unit, Alfons von Deschwanden, was still alive and had already been contacted by two of the surviving families years earlier. Deschwanden was only 19 when he was assigned to HPK 562 in 1942 as a mechanic but had been remembered by the survivors as having stood alongside the workers during inspections by the SS and that he had personally hidden a two year old child behind his workbench while their family searched for a better hiding place.
Tumblr media
Alfons von Deschwanden
Deschwanden’s father had been outspoken about the Nazis and would be one of the thousands arrested after the July plot but fortunately later released. Deschwanden himself had learned about concentration camps early on since his family had known people imprisoned for political reasons and during his time at HKP 562 almost faced trial himself when an officer reported to Berlin that he let slip a remark about the White Rose movement after he had heard about their deaths while at home on leave.
Despite the warnings from others in his unit he engaged in close friendships with his Jewish colleagues. Since their contact after the war he had received an annual box of oranges from the family of one of the survivors from their new home in Israel.
Good’s family wanted to seek recognition on behalf of Plagge for his actions but needed to prove the personal risk the man had taken. Good looked into the circumstances as to what challenges he may have faced in his position. The orders given to German officers within the Vilnius area were as follows, “Social communication with Jews as well as any private conversation is most strongly forbidden. Who will associate privately with Jews has to be treated as a Jew.”
These orders matched those by the Wehrmacht personal office to all officers with the added line, “Whoever violates this intransigent bearing, is not acceptable as officer.” Good discovered that another officer based in Vilnius, had been executed for assisting Jews in a similar way to Plagge, the Austrian Anton Schmid and a man as equal deserving in respect as Karl Plagge. Good deduced that Plagge had taken several risks but went to great lengths to make it appear as if he was playing within the rules, realising that there was always the chance of his plan collapsing if he stuck his neck out too far.
In 2004 Yad Vashem honoured Plagge with the title of Righteous Among the Nations with Good’s family, Plagge’s Godson and many survivors who remembered him in attendance at the ceremony in Israel. There was also a ceremony in Plagge’s hometown of Darmstadt and Alfons von Deschwanden attended with his family.
From a personal point of view it must said that the journal of Good’s path to finding the answers he was looking for is extremely enlightening and delves deep into the decisions faced by soldiers and civilians during the Holocaust, both the good and the bad. The story goes beyond what I have written here and a must read for anyone with an interest in the Holocaust. The efforts put in by Michael Good and the survivors to honour Karl Plagge, often reliving painful memories, can hardly be put into words. I can’t recommend his book The Search for Major Plagge enough.

Gender neutral baking uni student 👀
Liam, Jack and Arthur?
-💙
im assuming this is meant to be a uni au with a reader who loves to bake but forgive me if im wrong lol. also all of my knowledge is based on uk unis so please forgive me if this seems unfamiliar/weird to my non-brits. alsoalso i randomly assigned them degrees lol
gn!baker!reader (university au)
liam lawson (music major):
you two probably met at a university event where you were hired to bring the sweet treats and he was hired to bring the sweet tunes
you two bond instantly, especially when he realises you made the very yummy cookies that he's been snacking on in between sets
he's always very willing to taste test new recipes you work on and if they're really truly amazing, he might (keyword: might) be willing to share with some of his friends
if you get demotivated or something goes wrong, he will try and bake something himself to prove to you that you're fantastic and literally any mishaps can happen to anyone (because, let's be real, he's not good at it)
always willing to spend money on ingredients and equipment for you because he benefits from it (aka... more sweet treats)
will try and make a cake for your birthday because you shouldn't have to make your own birthday cake in his opinion - it takes him multiple tries and its not very pretty but its the thought that counts and it does turn out very delicious
jack doohan (sport science major):
a secret lover of all things sugary and sweet, even considering his major, and therefore is always found buying sweets from you when you have bake sales and stuff
eventually, after being at literally every single day of every single sale you have during the first semester, jack decides to ask for your number and you two soon find yourselves dating
your personal assistant and willing taste tester, jack can always be found in the kitchen with you because he loves helping you bake and claims that the food tastes even better because he made it with love (feel free to laugh at how cheesy he is)
jack is so sweet and kind that its very hard to get demotivated around him, but if you do, or maybe you're too busy with uni work to focus on your baking, jack will legit just do everything for you and, when something maybe turns out wrong, he will demand you teach him (he's just a lil silly guy)
much like liam, jack is willing to spend all amounts of money to ensure that you can continue baking because, again, he benefits from it
absolutely loves sharing your sweet treats with friends, family, his classmates, his professors - literally everyone must know how good your baking is!
arthur leclerc (engineering major):
you are close friends with his brother and therefore, when you first brought some snacks with you to the leclerc household, arthur had only one thing to say - can i have your number?
even though he loves your baking and sweets, arthur very much considers you to be the sweetest thing of all
do not let arthur in the kitchen with you. he will break something, hand you the wrong ingredients, burn something, etcetc. - literally, if there is something that can go wrong, arthur will 100% make it go wrong
arthur doesn't let you get demotivated - he can't bake, and he refuses to eat store bought goodies, therefore you'll just have to make good treats for him and revel in the multitude of praise he has for you
the first time you followed one of his maman's recipes and didn't tell him until you handed him the sweet treat, he burst into tears because you were so sweet and you got along with his maman and his brothers, and isn't that the best combination?
a hoarder, an over-snacker, and definitely not a sharer. arthur gets all grumpy when you give your baked goods to anyone who isn't him and he's not afraid to tell you that

#On this day
Events of October 17th
1968
2nd day of the White Album information
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
John Smith:
"It took about twelve hours between all the edits coming from the four sides. Then everyone went home and asked me if I could do the same thing with the stereo versions. I probably didn't sleep a full day that day, and I spent at least eighteen hours at work. Tellingly, on many other days there were drugs in the studio every now and then, but that day everyone was completely sober."
Tumblr media
Chris Thomas:
"I was in room 41 with John Lennon and John Smith, who were preparing current assignments. Listening to so many different songs drove us all crazy. By about four in the morning, John Smith had cut about four feet of tape, cut out the unnecessary pieces, and then glued everything back together. Ken came in around four in the morning and said, “Chris, can you help? Paul wanted to do another Helter Skelter mix, but passed out sitting at the console.” I went to the control room and we did everything while Paul was sleeping. Lying right on the console."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alan Brown (EMI Technical Engineer):
"I remember coming into the studio at 9 a.m. on Thursday, October 17th, 1968, and finding The Beatles still there. They spent the whole night in the studio finalizing the master recordings of what was later released on the White Album. They were everywhere, in room 41, in the listening room–anywhere–in almost every room that could be used. It was a crazy emergency."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Mark Lewisohn:
"On October 17th, George Martin sent a copy of the stereo master of the White Album to Capitol Records in the USA. Okay who’s interested in hearing about the school au I thought up in the shower
Keep in mind that all following information is based on my experience in British education, I have no clue how American schools run different
First we have the kids - James and Henri are both kids from the foster system, James has been adopted by Moses, whilst Henri is still technically a foster (ik ik not Franklin but maybe they’re neighbours). Henri is definitely the class clown whilst James is ambitious, but not too sure how to achieve his academic goals. Sarah is an exchange student from the UK living with Franklin, who is either a relative in this au or a family friend like in canon. She and James initially don’t get along but over time through the newspaper club and sharing most classes they grow closer. Sarah is an A+ student and she tutors James and Henri after school.
Most historical figures are teachers or general staff, except for named foot-soldiers like Joseph Plum Martin or other young historical figures like Sybil Ludington, who would be fellow students
Franklin - the kids’ (or at least James and Sarah’s) tutor (I think Americans call it home room?). He teaches science, and it’s his love of teaching that’s kept him from retiring (though he probably should have years ago). He runs the school newspaper (which James and Sarah are both a part of)
Moses - I can see him as a member of the site team or subject technician of some kind (basically helps to prepare stuff like experiments and maintain the school, but more responsibilities than a janitor). He’s also doing an online university course to get his teaching degree (he’d most likely go into either engineering/dt). The adopted Father for James and foster parent to Henri. Has known Franklin for years and the two are next door neighbours
Lafayette - French. Obviously. He’s a younger teacher popular with the students. His class is the only one Henri doesn’t goof around in, and the two are very close (spoilers: he may end up adopting him). Constantly asking the finance department to let him take a class trip to France. If anyone acts up enough to make him mad the class all turns on that one person (based on my mother’s experience (coincidentally she was also a languages teacher lol)). Often gossips and speaks with Hamilton in French.
Adams - idk if they teach law or politics in American high schools but if not then he’s probably an English teacher. His students live in terror or presenting essays or debates because no one can beat the man. You either love him or hate him, there’s no in between with his classes. Probably head of the department
Hamilton - probably either English or history (though maths is also a contender because he was treasury secretary). Also a younger teacher popular with the students. Has almost gotten into a fight with other teachers. And students. Definitely runs the debate club. Expects assignments in a week before the deadline. Is one of the leaders in staff room gossip.
Washington - I know most people make him the head teacher but I’m not a huge fan of that. He’ll probably end up as the head eventually for this au, but for most of it I imagine him is a department head. I can see him teaching either history, maths or geography (he was a surveyor after all, I could see him being a really good geography teacher). He’s that teacher that looks intimidating but is actually very nice. Believes way more in practical than theory and WILL drag his class outside in any and all weather to do a study. He also looks after any of the animals the school owns. Sometimes brings his dog to class. Is DEFINITELY involved in staff room gossip
Abigail Adams - I can see her as either the school nurse or some sort of creative arts teacher
Phillis Wheatley - definitely either an English teacher (damn we got a lot of those) and if not then some sort of creative arts teacher who also runs a poetry club. If anyone acts up in her class the other students ensure the body is never found.
Please suggest what subjects and the sort other historical figures would teach or any other ideas you have relating to this! ^^ Idk if I’ll draw anything based on this but it’s fun to brainstorm!

Case study and analysis of the 1992 Good Omens movie screenplay (“the shitscript”) in light of the ongoing WGA strike
As one could suspect, the topic of the 1992 Good Omens movie screenplay and its infamy has recently emerged from the depths of the fandom. In light of the ongoing WGA strike it’d be good to properly address this issue, starting with Neil Gaiman’s own recollection written in 2004:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s basically the same old story — of brilliant creative workers struggling under the pressure of detached studio executives and being legally forced to mutilate their work again and again for no artistic or economic reason — we’ve heard before in many different contexts.
Tumblr media
If you’re reading this and somehow still wondering why writers are fighting for their rights at the moment, their job security hasn’t changed much since then. Please follow the WGA, SAG-AFTRA, and other unions’ official channels for detailed information and ways to help the cause.
Tumblr media
Anyway, it took over a decade and an enormous effort to print the screenplay in a limited edition of 552 copies. It can’t be distributed otherwise due to IP law, but some fans shared its fragments online and heavily criticized them, dubbing the 1992 source material #shitscript
Tumblr media
There’s been obviously a lot of controversies over the changes in the plot and the relationship between the main characters. And rightfully so — the number of iterations has created something very different from the beloved book and the award-winning show we can all enjoy today.
It’s… objectively not good. Wouldn’t be considered a hit back then and certainly not by today’s standards. I don’t think I would watch it in any other way than through channel surfing. However, it’s not a monstrosity some people believe it to be and not a case of low effort.
Let’s start with the world building: the setting wasn’t changed to the US. It’s still very much based in the UK, mostly London and Tadfield, although the latter lies now by the sea and seems much more ominous. Interestingly, the British Museum becomes a prominent location as well.
The main character and the designated hero is not surprisingly Crowley, this time in his 90s anti-hero glory. If you haven’t watched many movies of this era, esp. dark fantasy, this trope involves middle-age disenchantment, cynicism, as well as hefty doses of sarcasm and brooding.
90s anti-heroes are a dark, grim, and unnecessarily violent embodiment of power fantasy, matching the destructive ideology of that time. Combined with uber-masculinity and performative strength over weaker characters, nowadays they naturally evoke more cringe or worry than awe.
1992 iteration of Crowley is basically in his Furfur era. Deeply unhappy and stuck in a dead end job, all he talks about is how he hates Earth and his assignment here, considering a transfer to Alpha Centauri as his one and only possibility of career advancement. Or life, really.
The talking part is important here, because he clearly compensates by insulting everything and everyone. He hates on the whole planet at length only to confess that he’d rather stay here with Aziraphale due to “no good restaurants”, “no decent bottle of wine” in Alpha Centauri.
Yes, he’s verbally abusive in his automatic response to stress. But doesn’t hate Aziraphale. In one particular scene he calls Azi stupid twice only to assure him that they are friends and to offer to solve the problem when he sees that his words were taken seriously and hurt him.
Crowley refers to him as “my angel” and “my dear Aziraphale”, agrees to Aziraphale’s suggestion of sharing a room, praises the angel as a “miracle worker around the home”, drinks the tea he makes for him, and generally proves to be much softer towards him than he wants to admit.
Aziraphale, on the contrary, wears his heart on his sleeve. He’s the one engineering ways to spend more time together, following Crowley around, checking up on him (including miracling himself into his apartment and office when no one answers the door), offering help right away.
He’s successfully calming Crowley down through his anxiety attacks, overcomes his dislike of heights (!) for Crowley, directly challenges him and even breaks rules only to make Crowley stay with him. Crowley seems to be his main motivation in this movie, not the saving the world.
1992 Aziraphale also has the most badass scene in the whole Good Omens multiverse to date, taking a 180 degree turn from the typical guardian angel we all know and love to the real angel of wrath protecting Crowley from harm in his true form.
But there’s no Their Side in this universe. The only semblance of that concept appears in the context of Anathema not representing either of their respective bosses, but humanity. “That’s the trouble with the humans. They’re on their own side.”
This Crowley appears not as much on Hell’s side as under Satan’s heel. He’s scared of him and subservient, and needs Aziraphale to prevent his escape as a pretext to do what is right. He lets the angel stop him by pretending that he doesn’t even see him cheating during their duel.
By finally standing up to his toxic boss (Satan is like Gabriel during the body-swapped trial, suave and cruel) and leaving Hell’s side to do good, Crowley takes an emancipated and employee-focused stance instead of fighting for his relationship with Aziraphale like shown in S1.
Which is a shame, but matches the overall tone of the screenplay and the times it was written in. The concept of free will, while simplified in a true Hollywood-style to issues like mind control and fear, is still crucial to this interpretation of the Good Omens original plot.
Especially the character of Anathema is seen fighting both of these things. There’s no Agnes Nutter with her prophecies here, only a 21-year-old witch and her will to thwart the ultimate evil versus her fear of doing it at a cost of one boy’s life, versus Satan’s brainwashing.
Madame Tracy appears slightly redesigned as a new character as well, but isn’t 𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 for the most part. She’s been enjoying her youth way too much to see how fast it was fleeting, and this sudden realization left her in shock from which she denies to come back.
Unfortunately she’s also the one who took in baby Adam and now stays under his care. The level of his parentification is unnerving, much like his bullying and loneliness. He struggles to be loved and ask for love, which becomes his main quest beyond, y’know, the apocalypse thing.
Don’t worry, despite everything all ends well just like in the book. The family of two gets a chance to start again on much healthier terms and Anathema to live for herself for the first time in years. Our heroes get back in their car, Crowley tempting Aziraphale with an apple.
All in all, this whole post is a very long reminder for Amazon Prime to #PayYourWriters, #PayYourActors, and #RenewGoodOmens! The strike is still ongoing and crucial for any new content for this and many other fandoms #GiveMeS3orGiveMeDeath

Surviving Love {vi/lvii}
Emilia McKenna was deemed to be a sweetheart in the eyes of others who met her, but in the eyes of John Brady she was an itch he couldn't scratch. The tension between them was palpable, yet, over time, as they saved each other's lives and saw past the tough exteriors, their respect for one another grew. And despite their initial hatred, an undeniable attraction simmered beneath the surface.
Paring: John Brady x Fem!Oc
Prompt: they hated how much they made the other felt
Word Count: ~3,800
Genre: Frienemies to lovers, SUPERRRR slow burn, mostly fluff but angsty towards the end
Setting: Thorpe Abbotts, UK and the Skies of Bremen
Warnings: mentions of blood, gore, death, language
Note || Hell in the skies...to think that this happened almost 80 years ago is actually heartbreaking. The amount of men that died during WW1 and WW2 is so staggering...Lest We Forget. love les, </3

━━━━━━━━━━
| JUNE 1943|
THE chill of the early morning air was biting, wrapping around the hangars and stirring in the faint pre-dawn light. Emilia pulled her leather flight jacket tighter around her, squinting at the shadows that moved in the distance. The engines of several B-17 bombers hummed low, a constant reminder of the mission ahead. She wasn't supposed to be on this one—well, not with this crew.
Her eyes trailed to the looming plane assigned to Major Cleven's team, her stomach twisting slightly with unease, "Flying with Cleven's crew, huh?" Maggie appeared beside her, tugging her jacket into place, the hint of a grin on her face despite the tension in the air, "Guess I'm up too, I'm heading out with your Flyboy," Emilia raised an eyebrow, glancing sideways at her friend.
"Why's that make you sound like you're happy about it?"
Maggie smirked, "Maybe I just like a little adventure."
"Adventure?" Emilia muttered though a small smile crept onto her lips, "Is that what they're calling it these days?" as the reality of the mission sunk in, the familiar sense of dread hit Emilia like a punch to the gut.
She'd flown plenty of times by now, and she'd seen more than her fair share of what could go wrong. But this—this mission to Bremen—was different. It was longer. More dangerous. And the fact that she wasn't flying with Brady and his crew only made it worse.
"Don't look so grim, Em," Maggie nudged her shoulder, "You're flying with Cleven, right? He's solid. And we're in the air together, so no getting sentimental on me," Emilia forced a breath, adjusting the straps on her helmet and glancing around. It was true, Cleven had a reputation as one of the best pilots around Thorpe Abbots. But that didn't mean she wanted to be off Brady's crew for this mission.
Brady had a rhythm she was used to. And now, standing here with Cleven's crew, she felt like an outsider, "Right," she mumbled, more to herself than Maggie, "Just another day," but she couldn't help the pang of frustration at the situation.
How had this happened? How had she ended up on a different plane, under a different pilot, for one of the most critical missions yet?
Her mind wandered to John Brady. She could already imagine his reaction when he found out she was flying with Cleven's crew instead of his...probably relieved.
Emilia was already walking toward the towering B-17, her boots crunching on the frosty ground as Cleven's crew milled about, preparing for the flight. Her mind swam with thoughts, mostly of Brady—his reaction when he found out she was flying with Cleven.
She could practically picture the scowl on his face. As she reached the foot of the plane, Major Gale Cleven gave her a nod, his dark eyes assessing, "Ready to go up, McKenna?" he asked, offering a reassuring, if somewhat brisk smile.
Emilia nodded, trying to push away the gnawing feeling in her gut, "Always ready, Major," from the corner of her eye, she saw Maggie exchanging some playful banter with the bombardier. Maggie always had a way of keeping spirits light, but even she couldn't shake the tension that clung to the air.
They were heading into enemy skies—Bremen was going to be rough.
"Let's get this show on the road," Maggie called out, flashing a grin to Emilia, "We've got a date with the flak boys."
Emilia rolled her eyes, suppressing a chuckle, "Yeah, yeah. Save that cockiness for Brady, Mags," Emilia then flung her pack into the belly of the plane and was just about to climb into the plane when she heard that familiar, cocky drawl behind her—low, teasing, and unmistakably Brady.
"Looks like I'm stuck with Carrots over there, huh?"
She turned around, catching sight of him sauntering toward her, his cap tucked under his arm and a glint in his eye that made it hard not to smile, "Maggie's not that bad, Brady. Don't be over-dramatic."
"I mean, she's not you," he said simply, shrugging one shoulder like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Emilia tilted her head, arching a brow, "What? You gonna miss me, Cowboy?"
"Don't act like you're not gonna miss me either, Sugs."
She snorted, shaking her head as she tossed a roll of bandages into a crate, "Shut your trap, Brady," a beat of silence fell between them—short but heavy, filled with something unsaid.
Then he spoke, quieter this time, "Don't die on me, McKenna. Or I'm gonna find you in hell and kill you myself."
Emilia looked at him, startled by the sudden seriousness, "Don't get sentimental on me."
He gave her that crooked smile again, softer now, "Hey, what can I say? I've got a soft spot for bossy nurses like you."
"I'm the only nurse that bosses people around."
"Exactly my point, Sugs."
"Brady!" Zim's voice rang out across the tarmac, "Quit chatting with your girl and get this bird on the move!"
Brady sighed and called back, "I'm coming!" then turned to her one last time, eyes lingering, "Don't die on me, Sugs."
She gave him a small smile, trying not to let it waver, "Right back at you, Cowboy. Don't kill them with your fancy flying," he chuckled at that and finally turned to jog back toward his plane, leaving her standing there.
Emilia watched him go, her heart tugging unexpectedly. He didn't even deny it, she thought, cheeks warming. Didn't deny she was his girl.
She blushed—just a little. Then shook her head, pulled in a breath, and climbed into the plane, the echo of his words still in her ears.
It was just another day in the sky, Emilia remembered herself.
Hours later, as they soared above the North Sea, Emilia sat tense in her seat, the constant thrum of the engines filling the cramped interior. She was used to the feeling by now—the slight claustrophobia that came from flying in a giant metal fortress, high above the world, always one malfunction or enemy bullet away from disaster.
But still, she felt uneasy. She wasn't with Brady's crew. Cleven was a capable pilot, sure, but she missed the familiarity of the banter, the rhythm of their flights. Brady's gruff commands, Zim's steady confidence—it was like muscle memory at this point.
Emilia pulled out her small pack of supplies, checking over everything for the third time. There wasn't much she could do up here except be ready for whatever hell awaited them over Bremen. She glanced toward one of the waist gunners, who gave her a wink, "No sweating, Doc. We'll be back on the ground soon enough," Emilia shot him a look.
"You're jinxing us," the waist gunner shrugged, but there was a flicker of tension behind his eyes. They both knew that Bremen was going to be one of the toughest missions yet.
Back on The Longshot, the hum of the engines filled the cockpit, that steady, familiar drone that usually grounded Brady in the chaos of the sky. But today, it did little to quiet the noise in his head.
The clouds ahead were scattered, the sun breaking through in streaks of gold, but Brady wasn't looking at them. He was staring through them, jaw tight, hands steady on the yoke, flying on muscle memory alone.
Then, without warning, Zim's voice crackled through the intercom, casual as ever, "So, when're you gonna ask her out?"
Brady blinked, the words breaking through his thoughts like a slap of cold air, "I'm sorry, what?"
"McKenna. When are you gonna ask her out?"
Brady scoffed, "McKenna? Ask her out? In whose right mind would think I'd do that?"
Zim laughed under his breath, "Oh c'mon, John, don't be a bitch. Ask the lady out. I can clearly tell there's something between the two of you."
Brady didn't reply. His hands tightened on the controls, eyes fixed ahead, "There is nothing between us."
"The way you guys act around each other says otherwise."
Brady gritted his teeth, "And how do we act around each other, huh, Zim?"
"You both bitch and moan like an old married couple for fuck's sake," Zim said, and Brady didn't have a comeback for that. He went quiet, and Zim knew he'd struck a nerve, "But it's more than that. It's the way you think about her in every situation. Every little thing reminds you of her."
"She's part of our crew," Brady muttered, his voice lower now.
"Sure she is," Zim said knowingly, "Ever since that day she walked through those doors to give us our first briefing, you haven't been able to shut up about her."
The silence that followed was different now. Heavier.
Brady exhaled slowly through his nose, "Let's just focus on the mission, hm?"
"Sure, sure," Zim said with a shrug in his voice. Then after a beat, quieter, but pointed, "Just don't wait too long...or you might lose her or worse yourself."
Brady didn't say anything. Just kept flying. But his grip on the yoke? Tighter than it had been a minute ago.
| JUNE 1943 |
THE hum of the engines was constant, almost deafening, as Emilia leaned against the cold metal wall of the B-17, glancing around at the crew. She could feel the tension in the air—the kind of tightness that settled deep in the pit of your stomach before a storm. This crew, Cleven's crew, was jittery. Not that she blamed them. Bremen was a hell of a target—deep in enemy territory, and the rumours of intense anti-aircraft fire had spread across Thorpe Abbots like wildfire.
She shifted in her seat, scanning the men as they ran through their final checks. The waist gunners were talking quietly to each other, nerves thinly veiled beneath strained smiles. The bombardier, Hambone who was transferred with Emilia, was hunched over his station, muttering something to the navigator, probably some last-minute discussion about the bombing run. And Cleven, up in the cockpit, was all business with Curt Biddick.
Emilia caught one of the waist gunners—Conroy—stealing glances at her from across the plane, his hands trembling slightly as he loaded his ammo belt. He was young, probably too young, and he'd yet to see real combat like some of the others.
She pulled herself away from the wall and crossed over to him, "Hey, Conroy," she said softly, kneeling beside him, "You okay?"
Conroy blinked, looking startled, before nodding a little too quickly, "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine, Doc."
Emilia gave him a reassuring smile, her voice calm despite the tension in her gut, "You're gonna be alright. We all are. It's just another mission. Stick to your training, keep your head down, and listen for orders. You've got this."
He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing, but he nodded again, the edge of fear still lingering in his eyes, "Thanks, Doc," Emilia squeezed his arm before standing, making her way back toward the middle of the plane.
As much as she wanted to believe her own words, she couldn't shake the sinking feeling in her chest. But she had to be steady—had to be their rock. If she let her fear show, it would only make theirs worse.
She glanced out one of the narrow windows, the distant coast of Europe now visible, a thin sliver of land against the vast expanse of ocean. Soon, they'd be flying over Germany, and that meant one thing: flak.
And not long after, the first burst of flak exploded to their left, jolting the plane. Emilia steadied herself, gripping the metal frame of the plane as she exchanged glances with Buck's crew. The mood shifted immediately—the nervous chatter silenced, replaced by the cold, steely focus that only came when you were minutes away from entering enemy fire.
"Flak at nine o'clock," someone called out over the intercom, his voice tight, "Stay sharp."
Emilia felt her pulse quicken as the plane jerked slightly again, more flak bursts appearing outside, like dark, ominous fireworks in the sky. She could hear Cleven's calm voice over the intercom, issuing commands, keeping the plane steady as they pressed forward into the thick of it.
"Hold on tight," Emilia murmured to herself, steadying her breath.
And then it started.
The Nazi anti-aircraft fire intensified, filling the skies around them with deadly black clouds. The B-17 shook violently as more flak bursts exploded nearby, sending shards of metal and debris rattling against the fuselage. Emilia could hear the muffled curses of the crew over the intercom, the tense, clipped voices of men who knew they were flying into hell.
"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!" Conroy shouted from his waist gun position, his voice high-pitched and cracking as the flak intensified around them. He opened fire at the distant silhouettes of German fighters, though Emilia could barely see them through the haze.
The plane jolted hard, a sickening metal-on-metal screech echoing through the interior as something exploded near the left wing. Emilia was thrown forward, her shoulder slamming into the metal wall with a grunt. She steadied herself, quickly checking her med kit.
"We're still flying," Cleven's voice came over the intercom, though Emilia could hear the strain behind it, "Keep it together."
Just as Emilia was about to move toward Conroy to check on him, there was a deafening bang from the rear of the plane. She whipped her head around, her heart skipping a beat.
One of the waist gunners—Davis—had been hit.
The impact was instant, and she didn't even hear him cry out. One moment, Davis was manning his gun, firing into the sky. The next, he was on the floor, crumpled in a heap, his lifeless body partially obscured by the smoke and debris that filled the air.
Emilia froze, her mind going blank. No.
For a split second, everything around her vanished—the roar of the engines, the shouts of the crew, the flak bursts outside. All she could see was Davis, lying there, unmoving. Blood pooled beneath him, staining the cold, unforgiving metal beneath his body. Her breath caught in her throat.
"Doc!" someone shouted, "Doc!" the call snapped her back to reality. Her instincts kicked in. She was moving before she even registered it, dropping to her knees beside Davis. But one look told her everything she needed to know.
He was gone. There was nothing she could do.
She swallowed the lump in her throat, the taste of bile rising, but forced herself to move. Others still needed her. She couldn't freeze up—not now.
But before she could get to her feet, another violent jolt rocked the plane. This time, something sharp sliced through the air, catching Emilia across her right arm. She hissed in pain, biting down hard as the jagged piece of debris ripped through her jacket, leaving a trail of blood in its wake. She pressed a hand to the wound, her palm quickly becoming slick with blood, but there was no time to stop. No time to think.
"Are you okay?" someone—maybe Conroy—called out from the front.
"I'm fine," she gritted out through clenched teeth, "Focus on maning that gun."
Her arm throbbed, the warm trickle of blood soaking into her flight suit. She tore a strip of fabric from the hem of her undershirt, tying it tightly around the wound. It would hold for now. It had to.
Amidst the chaos, a voice crackled over the intercom—low, panicked. Emilia immediately recognised it as Bosser, the ball turret gunner, "Doc, it's freezing down here," Bosser's voice shook, laced with fear, "My guns are jammed. I can't—move, I can't feel my hands,"Emilia's heart dropped. The ball turret was one of the most dangerous places to be in combat—exposed and isolated, with limited room to maneuver. And if Bosser was freezing up, he was as good as dead.
"I'm on my way!" Emilia shouted, pushing herself up despite the throbbing in her arm. She grabbed a spare blanket from her kit and made her way toward the hatch leading to the ball turret.
Buck's voice broke in, "McKenna, is it safe for you to go down there?"
Emilia's jaw clenched as she wrestled with the latch, "He's freezing. I can't leave him," Cleven didn't argue. She pulled open the hatch and crawled into the narrow space, her breath catching in her throat at the sight of Bosser. He was pale, his fingers stiff as he fumbled with the jammed guns, his breath coming in rapid gasps that fogged the cold glass around him, "Bosser," she called, her voice steady, "You're gonna be alright. Hold on."
She squeezed into the turret with him, wrapping the blanket around his trembling shoulders. His lips were turning blue, and she could see the fear in his eyes, "I'm sorry, Doc," he rasped, barely able to speak, "I can't feel anything."
"You don't need to feel anything right now," she said firmly, moving his frozen hands off the guns, "Just focus on staying warm," the temperature in the turret was brutally cold, even with the engines running, and Emilia could feel her own body starting to shiver.
She pulled the blanket tighter around Bosser, her good arm working quickly to rub his shoulders, trying to restore some warmth, "Stay with me, Bosser. We're gonna make it," the plane rocked violently again, more flak rattling against the fuselage. Emilia gritted her teeth, refusing to let the fear creeping up her spine take hold. She could see the distant glint of German fighters outside, but she couldn't afford to think about that now. Bosser needed her, "Just hang on," Emilia whispered, her voice barely audible over the chaos. She wasn't sure if she was talking to Bosser or herself anymore.
Bosser's shivering began to slow, his breathing becoming more regular, "Thanks, Doc," he murmured weakly, his eyes half-closed.
"Don't thank me yet," she said, her voice tight, "We're not out of this," but even as she said it, she couldn't help but glance out at the dark clouds of flak still filling the sky.
The plane lurched as another distant explosion shook the formation, but this time, the sounds of the bombing halted abruptly. For a brief moment, the world outside the B-17 seemed eerily silent, as if the air itself was holding its breath.
Buck's voice crackled through the intercom, "Pilot to crew. Mission scrubbed. Repeat, mission scrubbed," there was a collective pause. Emilia could almost feel the tension lift slightly, the crew exchanging glances.
And then—the flak stopped. The Germans had pulled back their fire. Silence stilled through the entire plane until Curt Biddick's voice broke the silence, "Flak stopped," they all knew what was coming next, "You know what that means, boys," Curt muttered under his breath from the co-piolt's seat, his voice tight with the unspoken knowledge of what was coming next. The silence outside wasn't a sign of peace. No, it was the prelude to something much worse.
German fighters.
"Okay," Cleven's voice cut through, cool and commanding as always, "Get ready, boys," Emilia could hear the shift in tone over the intercom.
The waist gunners checked their weapons. Conroy's breathing picked up, his gloved hands trembling slightly as he adjusted his grip on the gun. The tension was palpable again, thick in the air, as they all braced for what was to come.
"Roger that, Major," Conroy responded, his voice steady despite the nerves undoubtedly running through him.
Cleven's focus was absolute as he took control, "Command pilot to tail. What do you see back there?"
The intercom crackled, and the tail gunner's voice came through, strained, "I can't get a read on the 349th. They're still way back. Looks like they're struggling to keep up,"Emilia winced, her body pressed up against the freezing metal of the ball turret where she was still keeping Bosser warm. The cold bit through the layers of her uniform, but she stayed with him, her hand gripping his shoulder as the tension inside the plane mounted.
As the plane stayed silent, Emilia waited for the worst, "Welcome to hell."
Minutes later, the sky outside erupted into chaos once again. The familiar screech of German fighter planes diving toward their formation filled the air. Emilia's heart raced as the first tracers lit up the sky, bright streaks of light zipping past the windows as the waist gunners opened fire.
"Incoming! Fighters at three o'clock!" Reed shouted, his voice cracking with urgency.
The plane rattled as Cleven swerved to avoid the incoming barrage of fire. Emilia pressed her back against the turret wall, her head spinning as the chaotic roar of machine guns and engines reverberated through the metal. The B-17 shook violently as rounds pinged off the fuselage, the metallic clinks mixing with the steady hum of the engines.
"Get 'em off us!" Cleven ordered his voice tight with frustration.
"I'm trying!" the tail gunner called out, the rapid bursts of machine-gun fire echoing through the plane. The Germans were relentless, diving in and out of the formation with terrifying precision.
Emilia focused on keeping Bosser warm, but her eyes flicked to Conroy as he squeezed off another burst from his waist gun, his face pale but determined.
A deafening explosion rocked the plane. Emilia was thrown forward, her head slamming against the cold metal of the turret. She bit down a cry, her vision blurring as she tried to focus. Another hit—directly at the waist of the plane, "Conroy!" Bosser's voice was a scream now, raw with terror.
Emilia turned just in time to see Conroy slump over, his body crumpling like a ragdoll as a round tore through him. The sight froze her in place, her breath catching in her throat.
For a long moment, she couldn't move. Couldn't think. The blood pooled around his body, seeping into the cracks of the floor. She stared, her mind blank. Her hands shook, the fear and horror of what she'd just witnessed settling like ice in her veins, "Doc, Doc!" someone called again, pulling her back from the edge.
She snapped into motion, her body moving on autopilot as she stumbled over to Conroy. She checked his pulse in hopes of something and there it was—a pulse. It was weak but he was still alive. Immediately Emilia dug through her kit for her necessities, she grabbed the gauze and put pressure on the wound. Conroy groaned in pain which was a good sign for Emilia, he was still responsive.
The sky outside was still a hellscape of flak and enemy fire, but the German fighters had finally broken off, retreating into the clouds. The B-17 was limping, but it was still in the air. Emilia leaned back against the cold metal, her body trembling with exhaustion and pain, once Conroy's bleeding stopped and she gave him some antibiotics. Her arm throbbed where the shrapnel had torn through her skin, and her hands were sticky with blood—some of it Conroy's, most of it not.
"Mission scrubbed," Cleven's voice came over the intercom again, this time quieter, heavier, "We're heading home."
Emilia let out a long, shaky breath, her head falling back against the wall. She could still hear the steady hum of the engines, but the adrenaline was wearing off, leaving only the cold and the weight of what had just happened.
Davis was gone. Conroy was unstable. Bosser was barely hanging on. And she was still here.
"Just hold on, boys," she whispered, closing her eyes for just a moment, "We'll get you home."

World Heritage Day
Visit and support your local cultural icons and monuments, or travel to see some of the remarkable cultural heritage sites from all over the wide world.
Every day people all over the world celebrate their cultural heritage, simply by living their lives in a way that embodies who they are and where they came from. But one day a year is set aside to celebrate the joint history and heritage of the human race. World Heritage Day encourages us to celebrate all the world’s cultures, and to bring awareness to important cultural monuments and sites, and to espouse the importance of preserving the world’s cultures.
Learn about World Heritage Day
World Heritage Day, which is also known as the International Monuments and Sites Day, celebrates the work carried out by the ICOMOS – International Council on Monuments and Sites. The day is all about increasing the awareness of the importance of the diversity of cultural heritage and preserving it for generations in the future. Ancient monuments and buildings are an asset to us all around the world. However, they need to be protected to ensure that they continue to be an asset for years and years to come. Therefore, the day is a collective effort of communities around the globe.
On this day, there are a number of different events that happen all over the world. This includes a wide range of activities, conferences, and visits to heritage sites and monuments. For those who are unaware, a heritage site is basically a place that is of cultural significance. It preserves the legacy of intangible attributes and physical artifacts of a society or group that is inherited from previous generations.
There are truly some incredible heritage sites and monuments around the world. This includes the Machu Picchu, which is situated in the lush and mountainous terrain high above the Urubamba River in Peru. There are lots of amazing sights in Egypt, and the Pyramids of Giza are one of them. Other places of note include Bagan in Myanmar, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and the Great Wall of China.
History Of World Heritage Day
So the first (and possibly most confusing?) part of World Heritage Day is that that actually isn’t it’s a formal name. What is popularly known as World Heritage Day is actually called The International Day for Monument and Sites and was established in 1982 by the International Council for Monuments and Sites, or ICOMOS. This organization was established on the principles set forth in the Venice Charter, otherwise known as the 1964 International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites.
The organization was founded after a need was identified to protect these valued locations, and it saw the coming together of experts from hundreds of related fields. These include architects, engineers, geographers, civil engineers, and artists and archaeologists. Each year they work to help ensure that some of the world’s most beautiful sites and important cultural monuments remain preserved for future generations.
Since it’s inception it has grown to include almost 10,000 members in over 150 countries all over the world. Of these 10,000 members over 400 are members from institutions, national committees, and international scientific committees, all working together to save important sites and identify new ones that need to be added to the watch list.
2016 saw the addition of Gorham’s Cave Complex in the UK, the Khangchendzonga National Park in India, and the Persian Qanat in the Islam Republic of Iran. It’s through the tireless efforts of its members and leadership that these places will be preserved for future generations.
There is a theme that is assigned to each World Heritage Day. We would definitely recommend taking a look at the theme for each year, as it will help to give you some direction regarding how to celebrate the day. For example, some of the themes in recent years have included the likes of “Rural Landscapes” and “Shared Cultures, Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility.”
How to celebrate World Heritage Day
Perhaps the most important way to celebrate World Heritage Day is to search out those locations near you that count as World Heritage Sites, and perhaps pay them a visit. Before doing so research the site and find out what steps are needed to protect it, and respect them during your visit. If you’re feeling more proactive, then perhaps consider submitting a site that you feel is worthy of being protected for it’s cultural importance to ICOMOS. Don’t let an important site disappear from the world, do your part on World Heritage Day to raise awareness and preserve it for future generations.
You should also take a look online to see if there are any events going on in your local area in honor of World Heritage Day. You will find that a lot of events take place to try and increase awareness regarding the preservation of important buildings and monuments. You can get involved in one of these events so that you can lend your support to these important causes. It should not be too difficult to find out what is going on in your local area. If your community has a local Facebook group, you can refer to this for more details.
It is also a good idea to spread awareness regarding this day with the people that you know. This is something you can do with ease via social media. You can post a message that informs your friends, followers, and family members of this day and encourage them to post something too. You could post a photo of one of the best international sites you have visited or one that is on your bucket list, and then ask your followers to reply with their choice. This is a great way of getting everyone involved and raising awareness about this date!

Some ttte human headcanons for characters I don’t like
Rebecca: Rebecca has Parkinson’s disease, she gets tremors that she cannot control, she gets frustrated at not being able to control her body similar to her engine counterpart where she has the wheel slip issue that she cannot control. She and Henry are both members of the chronic illness club and hang out with each other as they can relate to each other with their struggles with a chronic illness. Rebecca being younger often looks up to Henry who’s older than she is. Just like her engine counterpart, she is a people pleaser to a fault and really wants to impress Gordon. She also once cried over a dish set that had a scuffed up and damaged box because she was afraid no one was going to buy it and love it, so she bought it.
Caitlin: she has ADHD and is often unaware of volume and hyperactivity. She gets frustrated when she is told to calm down because she has trouble relaxing, she also has trouble sleeping and can be a bit reckless (this includes racing down the mainline)
Connor: also has ADHD, enough said.
Sydney: after sustaining a serious head injury in a crash, he can’t form new memories. He knows who he is and his past before his injury, but other than that, he can’t remember anything. He keeps lists everywhere to try and help him remember (though he keeps forgetting to make those lists or read them) and he has sticky notes everywhere reminding him to read certain sticky notes. Percy did give him a planner to help him keep track of things, but he just forgets to either write in it, or look at it. What does seem to help is if he repeats what he needs to remember out loud, or record it on a tape recorder.
Bruno: disclaimer I have never watched AEG because I am too cultured to stoop that low, Bruno is originally from America, his parents moved to the UK when he was five, he has autism and struggles to make friends at school, he’s about primary school age and prefers watching people than playing with them. He also loves trains even though they can be too loud for him. One day he decides to skip school and go down to the yard and watch the engines instead of putting up with the kids at school and being made to play with them by his teacher (fun fact: this happened to me in second grade, my teacher assigned two girls to play with me at recess and told me to play with real friends when I introduced her to my shadow. I hated every single moment of it as recess was my time to recharge)
Then Diesel came in the yard and while he was refueling his engine, Bruno just walked up to him and asked if he could watch. Diesel had no idea what to do and was stuck with Bruno following him around all day until finally the police arrived and took Bruno home. They still hang out together after school, and Bruno likes watching him shunt in the yard and the mechanics work on his engine.

An exchange student from Canada saw me crying and gave me a tissue. We talked. He's really nice. I'm sane now.
This is going to be a full vent. This is my full story on this situation. Only read if you want to and if you're okay with it. Also warning, this is long as fuck, I really trauma dumped here.
tw: suicidal thoughts, self-harm
Backstory: High School
I was labelled as a jack of all trades, master of none. I'm naturally a more art/social science/emotion/humanities person, but I took STEM subjects in high school (Physics, Chemistry, Information & Technology/ Computer, and Calculus & Algebra), partly because these subjects had objective, standard answers, which supposedly makes getting marks in exams easier, partly because I felt like I had to as my parents are both PhD in engineering, and at that point I still thought I had to be "my parents' daughter".
So throughout high school, all my external achievements were humanities/arts related while my studies were STEM orientated. But I struggled a lot with my STEM subjects (except for Computer because a lot of that is just stuff you would know if you use one a lot), and I mean, a lot. As in failing quizzes, fucking up assignments. Thank God I had really kind teachers who cared more about my mental health than my grades and were willing to help and accommodate my needs. But there were many times when I straight up broke down during a lesson and ran off to the social worker's. I skipped several lessons because I just couldn't go to class and try to listen when voices in my head were all yelling at how much of a useless piece of shit I was. I would spend three hours on a single question, and still get it wrong. It always felt like no matter what I did, I would go nowhere. And it didn't help that when I asked for help from my parents, their response would always first be "How can you not know something so simple". By senior year I gave up and started asking my friends and the internet.
On the contrary, I thrived in my language classes and liberal studies class. Even if I initially sucked due to the change in the system, I asked, I studied, I worked and I improved. I got somewhere. Effort paid off in a fair ratio. I never needed to ask my parents anything about that. I never needed to ask anyone other than my teacher. I loved doing my homework in those subjects. My writings were printed out as examples for the whole class. It was great.
Backstory: College Selection
By the time college choices rolled around I had no idea what to choose. At the same time, my mother was also suggesting I go to mainland Chinese universities for my undergrad, and I didn't want that. Going to the States or the UK wasn't affordable for my family, so I opted to stay local, to the dismay of my whole extended family.
So in the mess of all of this and no parental support because they are Chinese stereotypes who think the only courses worth studying are doctor and lawyer, my school's career counsellor suggested Bachelor of Arts and Studies to me (here's their website) a new personalized interdisciplinary degree in HKU. And I was so happy. It felt right. It felt like putting a on tailored dress. And despite my parents' protest, I put that as my first choice.
College entrance exams came and went. Overall I did pretty well. Got top scores in Chinese, English, Liberal Studies, and Computer. Got average for Chemistry, Math and Physic despite spending most of my study leave on these subjects. Just passed Calculus.
So the way the local system works (it's called JUPAS if you wanna look it up) is that by the end of November, you need to submit your 20 university programme choices, but after the public exam result is released, you're assigned 24 hours to change your choices.
And this is where everything started going to hell for me.
My parents, who in the first round of selection, compromised and let me put what I wanted, looked at my marks, and my choices, and vetoed everything. They said I'm not gonna get a job with an interdisciplinary degree, there's no career path for psychology, that the arts and science degree was created because the art, social science and science faculty didn't have that many people.
A different advisor, one who didn't know me personally suggested my current programme: biomedical engineering, which basically combines medicine with engineering. They said it's a lucrative career since health service is in demand, and with my basis in STEM subject I would do well, and that it's easier to go from a science subject to humanities if I want to do something different in post-grad than vice versa. By this time I had 2 hours left before confirmation.
If we were to completely ignore me as an individual, they're right. This would be the logical choice.
But at that point, I already knew it felt wrong. But unfortunately for me, all I could say is it felt wrong, which isn't a strong rebuttal.
With no "logical" rebuttal, two yelling parents and a fucked up head, sobbing, I changed my first choice to this programme. I cut my arm with a cutter over the myriad of scars I gave myself over the years. I told my best friend who was asking if I was ok, that I'll give it a go, and if it doesn't work I'll find a way out. I told the rest of my close friends that my undergrad will be me paying a debt to my parents, and I'd figure out my own dream in the future.
I shouldn't have caved in.
Back Story: University
University started. Immediately it felt wrong. Save for my elective (HKU has this really cool thing called Common Core, look it up if you're interested but essentially it's compulsory electives) I felt so detached from my engineering courses. I couldn't explain, just an inherent feeling that I don't belong here.
It didn't help that it was at this time that I realized I straight-up don't like biology.
Managed through year 1 first semester with average grades. Semester 2 I didn't have any courses directly related to the programme save for a probability & stats course that I fucked my way through. The rest of my grades were pretty good, even got two A- s. The feeling that I didn't belong persisted but popped up a little less.
Now: Breaking
Year 2 came, and from the moment in August when I had to sign up for courses, the feeling of wrongness came back in full force, amplified, even. It felt all-consuming.
This is from my diary:
"I don't wanna be here. I don't want this degree. I don't want this career God I don't want it. It's doesn't fit. I don't fit in this space. This isn't mind. It feels like dysmorphia. It feels like tar, black and toxic and vicious, sticking to my skin, trying to mould my body into something I'm not, to seep into my skin and dye my blood a dull shade of grey. I wanna fucking run away. I wanna fucking die. I don't fucking know what to do."
You guys kind of know the rest, because that's when I met you guys and started feeling safer here than anywhere else, and vented here. But for reference
September
October
November
December
January, January, Fuck you January
I skipped class. I got antidepressants. I binge ate and became overweight. Failed three classes. Parents didn't find out anything until the grades came out. Then they lost their mind.
Now: Not Enough
They blamed me for not trying hard enough.
They said oh failures happen, you have to learn from your mistakes and try again.
I have to set up a proper routine. Dedicate all my time and energy to staying physically healthy and studying. Spent my "free time" thinking. I even got berated for listening to music with headphones on.
Dad asked me why did I fail biochemistry. I said it was hard, the pace was fast, and I don't like the subject. He said there's no point in not liking it.
Mom said I needed to get rid of the idea that this degree is against me and accept it, that I shouldn't dwell on what-ifs from the past, and all the reasons they convinced me to choose this still stands, that learning is a fun and interesting thing that I should take joy in, that I won't be able to handle being a psychiatrist, that I used to be such a star student what the fuck happened to me, that each path has their own difficulties and I'm already on this road so why won't I just keeping going for the next two years, that if I quit and start over I'll be older than my cohort and my friends will all graduate before me and why won't I just follow the normal path dammit
SO EVERYTHING IS MY FUCKING FAULT HUH??
I don't fucking know anymore.
Now: The present
The reason I was crying earlier, was that I went to have a meeting with an academic advisor to ask about the possibility of transferring to a different programme.
There are two ways.
One, apply for an internal transfer by June. But that requires exceptional grades, and I don't have that.
Two, quit university and re-apply with my college entrance exam results. But then none of the credits I earned in the past two years will be transferred. All will expire. I went through shit for nothing except to confirm my mistake is a mistake.
I might figure something out when I'm not crying my brains out but right now neither option sounds like an option to me.
I could barely ask anything intelligent afterwards because I was trying so hard to stop myself from breaking down immediately.
Now: How I feel
I'm not supposed to feel like this. This is not normal. This is not how my university life is supposed to go. It cannot be normal to want to die every day.
The moment I realised this was fundamentally wrong was when I looked at my high school friends' social media, and saw them living their best lives: dating, joining the committee of societies, getting awards and scholarships, jobs and internships, travelling, going to parties, everything a young person should be doing. My best friend is chasing her dreams to became an actress at NYU TISHC, already getting paids acting jobs at year 1, going to prominent events, maintaining a 3.9 GPA, goes out partying all while maintaining a long distance relationship with her athletes boyfriend who is the best of the best in Asian youth, handsome, and just a great guy in general.
I'm supposed to be on the same level as them.
I'm from an elite class of an elite school in an elite city. I've been on city radio four times and city-wide broadcast television once. I was on four department/society committees, two of which I was chairlady. I wrote and directed my own play. My name was followed by seven internal awards when it was my turn to get my diploma during the graduation ceremony. I aced my classes. My drawing and writing had been in my school's anthology and yearbook. I genuinely enjoyed learning.
I'm not supposed to be this.
I'm not supposed to be this depressed, overweight person who can't get out of bed and skips classes and fails courses. I'm not supposed to be this stagnant, I was always moving. I was always giving it my 100%. I'm not supposed to not make any friends and want to stay in my bed all the time. I'm not supposed to be insomniac, or sick, or depressed, or overweight.
I was always fighting.
I don't have any energy in me anymore to fight.
I'm not supposed to turn out like this. This isn't who I want to be/ I hate whoever I am now. This isn't right.
But I'm fucking stuck, I don't know what's the truth, I don't know how valid "I don't like this" is.
A lot of people tell me to just ignore what my parents say but it's really not that simple. I only realized they can hurt me despite loving me and it's not my fault last year. And even then it's hard to stay firm on this belief. Because truthfully, I don't know what's right, I only know what feels wrong.
Fuck this. I want to fast forward until the day I figure shit out. I want to live here on Tumblr.
Fuck everything.
